Since 2000, N. Eilersen A/S has been manufacturing part of our furniture range in Tianjin, China. What began as a ground-breaking tryout has quickly become a lasting commitment with a zealous focus on our elegant design and high quality.
Since we started, production has increased rapidly and today we expand, monitor and reinforce our operations on weekly basis. It has long been apparent that our involvement in China - like our company vision - is long-term.
Production in China entails more than just setting up a factory and as a Danish manufacturer with over 100 years of experience in producing high quality furniture, we want to ensure that Danish standards are incorporated not only into the product, but also into labour relations, environmental impact, our supply chain, our community and international communications.
Our local initiative is to develop a community programme that addresses some of the biggest challenges faced by the people of China. Lack of education among children and young people is becoming a major problem for future generations. At the same time, health and hygiene are deteriorating and a sustainable environment is in fast decline, leaving over nine percent of China's most vulnerable population in extreme poverty.
As a result, since the beginning of 2005, we have been developing a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy and programme, which endeavours to improve Chinese livelihoods in the relatively local sphere that we operate in and around the factory grounds.
In order to ensure international standards in our sustainable CSR programme, we are working with the Public and Private Partnership Programme under DANIDA and an external consultancy agency, Allinfact. The two agencies are assisting us in designing a customised policy and programme, which mirrors our company values and standards.
Our two main initiatives are to develop a policy and a programme, which are to become part of our daily operations. We want to document and communicate our impact on the Chinese society - and we want to improve the current, local standards.
We have therefore decided to work with People Link, a local Chinese organisation, and develop an educational programme in Tianjin, where most of our Chinese employees and their families are residing.
Why are we getting involved?
The Corporate Social Responsibility project enables us to document, monitor, improve and communicate our operations in China. We do not just follow the national laws and regulations. Our social responsibility aims at improving the lives of our local community.
We want to align our CSR and company brand into our business strategy. We ensure that all internal functional synergies are identified and acted upon. As such, the project endeavours to develop an invaluable tool for our company, our clients and our employees - while we continue to prepare and plan for another 100 years of Eilersen furniture.
